Hi -joined this forum on Friday, purchased my Gal on Saturday! - a y-plate 2001 1.9tdi Zetec with 37k on the clock

Having studied this forum in some detail on Friday, i felt reasonably confident in going to look at this Gal on Saturday morning

It's a lovely car and ran very nice so i bought it!

However, i confess i couldn' find or see the auxhiliary heater exhaust which i though was located under the near side rear wheel arch - i checked the front arch as well but couldn't find it their either - could only see the plastic liners

conseuently, i don't know if the heater is running or not

also, whilst it has air con, i don't think it's dual - their are roof mounted controls (a fan and temp control) on the left hand side just behind the pillar - can anybody confirm whether this is dual air con or jsut a rear heating system

thanks all

Dual air con has air vents in the roof lining above the rear seats so that passengers can direct a stream of air to their individual heads - a bit like being on an aircraft. If you don't have these, you just have the "extra" rear heater unit that is either controlled by the 2 dials in the headlining above the middle row seats, or on climate control systems, the in-dash control unit.

The exhaust is just in front of the rear wheel not actually in the wheel arch, the controls in the head lineing are as Ivor say for the rear heater unit, the main switch for this is on the dash, it's the one that has a picture of the car on it with wavey lines in it :o this unit is a recirc heater and a none AC unit :o

ONLY GALAXY DIESELS HAVE AUX HEATERS FITTED TO THE NEARSIDE REAR JUST IN FRONT OF THE REAR WHEEL THE HEATER'S EXHAUST LOOKS LIKE A MOPED EXHAUST BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE EXHAUST WHEN HEATER IS WORKING

VERY HOT. SOUNDS LIKE A JET ENGINE WHEN WORKING SHOULD START WORKING BELOW 10C THEN CUTS OUT WHEN DEMAND NOT NEEDED. 51 PLATE GALAXYS DON'T HAVE DUEL AIR CON ONLY 04 PLUS WHICTH HAVE AIR VENTS

IN HEAD LINING AUX HEATERS CAN TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO FIRE UP YOU CAN NORMANY HEAR IT FIRE AND SMELL IT DOES'NT NORMANY WORK IN WARMER MONTHS AS THERE IS NO DEMAND ON HEATING SYSTEM ;)

Curious - My 2001 51 Plate does have dual Air Con - complete with Roof vents and the loss of the nearside window opener as the rear Air Con unit fits inthere.

Even more curious is that DUAL AIR CON was vailable back in 1999 on selected Ghia models! and the Aux Heater is and was available on PETROL models! for a short while the VR6 models had them fitted as standard! there is a member on here that has a VR6 model with one fitted! and I have even seen a 2.3 in a dealers with one fitted

Pucked the Gal up on Saturday - very pleased with it

being the anorak that i am, i read through the hand book from start to finish!

the section on the auxhiliary heater states it is controlled via controls on the digital clock - you can even set a timer for it to activate whilst you are not in the vehicle -say on a cold winters morning

however, i dont' have a digital clock - only an analogue one - so don't have any controls for the heater!

have i definitaly got the heater? (i've a 1.9 tdi zetec 2001)

I looked under the car and could see heater pipers but i think they are for the internal rear heating system, (i.e. water carrying pipes) not the diesle powered jet engine thing

can somebody please educate me here!

thanks

There are two versions of the heater, one that can be pre-set and one that can not.

Look under your driver's seat. Is there a battery pack? If not then you don't have the pre-settable version, just the "automatic operation" one.

I've just got used to the jet engine landing noise from my aux heater by the end of this winter - the kids think it's great.

What's not great is the clouds of smoke/steam ? coming from it recently. All goes away when the car is hot but we get some funny looks when stopped at traffic lights surrounded by a white cloud of smelly smoke

Anyone know what this could be and how I can stop the smoke ? the car is running beautifully - 03 plate 1.9 TDI galaxy - 15,000 miles on the clock.

Hi,

this could be signs of an interupted fuel supply to the heater. This can be caused by leaks in pipes, air being sucked into the fuel, if they have there own fuel pump this maybe failing.

It is likely that you do not see it when the engine is hot because I believe the aux heater cuts out when the water temp reaches a certain point, this being enough to supply the heat needed.

i've had my Gal for two weeks now and am not aware of the aux heater firiing up at all - certainly, i don't think i've heard any jet engine noises!

Latrine, depends on how cold it has been in your area, been quite mild here the last couple of weeks, needs to drop below 10 deg to get it to work.

i've a feeling it's been there or thereabouts

however, i thouhgt it was supposed to come on if the coolant was below a certain temperature - or is it that both criteria has to be met, not either?

I purchased a 1.9 tdi four years ago. When purchsed, the aux heater when cold fired up, but I also had a clicking/ ticking noise as well. I took it back to local dealer (Ford) but they said there was nothing that could be done ?

Has any one else heard of this problem, if indeed it is a problem, I am sure the heater works okay, but should the heater make this noise??

Can any one help with this?

Clicking noise is the metering/fuel pump for the heater, a modified pipe assy was made avaible with insulated clips which apparently quietens it down, doesn't really bother me, as I at least know it's working!!

The heater need the external temp to be 10 otr below AND the coolant temp to be 75 or below.... Before it attempts to fire up.

Re. the clicking noise - I've had two TDI Alhambras that produce this sound when the air temperature/engine is cold. According to the Seat dealer(s), the sound is normal and is caused by the fuel pump.
